It’s always quite strange how trends and designs eventually come back around. We have seen it across almost all modern industries but I guess none of us ever thought that we would see past trends in phones make a return like the foldable smartphone.

When we take a look back, phones started off life as large devices that were bigger than the palm of our hands. As the technology evolved and phones became more mainstream they became smaller and that was the aim of manufactures - to make phones even smaller. This is when manufacturers then created flip phones, allowing phones to have larger screens even though they could fold up and slide into your pocket or bag easily.

Move on a few years and most mobile phone deals would offer larger phones that had screens that took up the size of the device with touchscreen capability. It was a new dawn for the world of smartphones but they have transformed how we live our lives. Despite this, the latest mobile phones can only get so big as they then cross over into tablet territory but this is where foldable smartphones really make a difference.

Foldable smartphones are the latest innovation from manufacturers. They provide users with the same functionality as standard smartphones but they come with larger screens which is ideal for those who are looking to use their devices for work or even watching videos. So, Honor has released its first foldable smartphone - the Magic V, so what does this new and exciting device offer?

The Phone in Detail

Honor was once a sub-brand of Huawei, so they clearly know a thing or two about how to design and manufacture and design devices and the Magic V is no different.

It’s important to state that this is not the first foldable phone to enter the market as Samsung has already done it with the Galaxy Z. However it has the same large internal folding screen that makes it possible to do much more. But it also boasts a smaller external screen that is the same size as standard smartphone screens, so it can be used as a phone as well.

The model is due for release in Q1 and is likely to come in at around the £1,000 mark while this is expected to have 256GB of storage.

The flagship feature of this phone is the internal folding screen which can open up to an impressive 7.9 inches while boasting a resolution of 2272 x 1984 and a refresh rate of 90Hz and an aspect ratio of 10:9. This takes it beyond that of the Samsung Z Fold 3 which has a 7.6 inch internal screen and a slightly lower resolution. Honor claims that the internal screen of the Magic V is much like having two 21:9 screens alongside each other.

So far so good and it doesn’t stop there. The external screen of the Magic V also comes in at 6.45 inches which is larger than the Samsung. This makes the device highly usable, especially when users don’t want to have to unfold it.

When the device is folded, it comes in at 72.7mm wide, 14.3mm thick and a height of 160.4mm. Once unfolded, it becomes 141.1mm wide and 6.7mm thick, making it a slim device. For those who like to add something more to their device, it is also available in a range of colours such as black, silver and orange. It is also built to last as it is claimed that the device can be folded and unfolded around 200,000, so expect an exceptional level of durability.

What About Internally?

Whether people are looking for top gaming phones or the latest smartphones, what happens internally is really important. Fortunately, the Magic V is likely to offer exceptional speed thanks to the latest chipset from Qualcomm - the Snapdragon Gen 1. It also boasts 12GB Ram and up to 512GB of storage. The battery is also suited for high users and it is possible to charge it up to 50% in just 15 minutes. It is also compatible with 5G which is being rolled out in the UK and it comes with Android 12 so you can expect lots of useful features.

For those who like to capture every moment in vivid colour, then the camera has three 50 megapixel sensors on the rear and this includes a main sensor, ultrawide camera and a spectrum enhanced camera. It also comes with a pair of selfie cameras that are both 42 megapixels each, enabling you to take some great personal shots.
