Android 12L

It seems as though Google is constantly taking over the tech world as it attempts to bring itself in line with the likes of Apple. If the release of the latest Google Pixel 6 phone is not enough then Google is looking to capture more of the market with its latest release of Android 12L which is an upgrade on Android 12.

Announced at the latest Android Dev Summit in October, Google announced Android 12L. This new operating system has been designed and harnessed for the next wave of devices with larger screens. So, if you’re looking for the best deals on tablets, you might want to take this new announcement into consideration. This will include larger tablets and even the new foldable phones that are hitting the market. Furthermore, it has also been designed for the likes of Chromebook that you can purchase at OneTech Gadgets.

So, what does it all mean?

What is Android 12L?

Essentially, this is an operating system update that enables the platform to be used on the latest mobile phones and tablets. The system has been tweaked so that it becomes usable on large screens, giving users the opportunity to multitask while also offering better support for apps, enabling users to get even more from top gaming phones.

The latest smartphones are changing which means that they are coming with larger screens and foldable screens. What this version offers is better optimisation of the layout of the user interface. This means that the home screen will benefit from a better placement, notifications will be easier to view and some settings can be accessed quickly.

Google has announced that any screen with 600 density-independent pixels and more will display a two-column layout that will make it possible for users to use the whole screen. This makes it possible for users to carry out a number of tasks without the need to close one app before opening another.

What Does the L Mean?

While this has not been confirmed by Google, it is believed that the L stands for Large Screen Devices.

What Makes 12L So Different to Android 12?

Android 12L has been designed so it can alter the layout of a device. This means that the lock screen, home screen and notifications can be moved. This will give screens a two-screen layout, ensuring that the entire screen is used. So, if you are looking for deals on tablets, you might want to consider the size of the screen and the ability to upgrade to Android 12L in the future.

Google made an example of this during the event and said the quick settings could be located on the left-hand side of the display. This would leave the right-hand side free for notifications or another app. It also boasts a new taskbar that makes it easier for users to switch between apps. When they drag an app from the taskbar, it will then open up in a split-screen mode and this is available for all apps.

Apps will also look better as they won’t be stretched thanks to letterboxing. Furthermore, Google is also giving manufacturers the freedom to change the size and shape as they see fit, which means that top gaming phones or the latest cheap laptops and tablets will have an improved look and feel.

Android 12l Large Display

One major issue for users of larger devices is the issue they have with apps as they have never been optimised for use with larger screens. However, this is going to change too, as users can make use of a multi-window mode and benefit from continuity across the device, ensuring it looks more uniform and appealing to the eye.

The aim is to provide users with a better experience and to make apps look better by default. As manufacturers will have the scope to implement this into their devices, it means that users are certain to benefit from better usability.

So, Google has said there are three main components that make Android 12L different from Android 12:

  • Optimisation for large screens includes an improved user interface that makes it easier to use on large screens.
  • It is designed for multitasking which includes a taskbar that makes dragging and dropping into split-screen mode easier while switching apps becomes faster.
  • Enhance compatibility experience as it will make apps look as though they have been designed for large screens.

So, When Will it Be Available?

It is likely that the new update will be available during the early part of 2022 and Google is working closely with partners to get it rolled out as soon as possible. In terms of support, it is likely that it will work with most new devices that have 600dp screens of a minimum size although that is still yet to be disclosed.
