NHS Calls For Smartphones To Have 'Bedtime Mode'
Smartphones emit short-wavelength blue light. This blue light disrupts the production of melatonin a hormone which we start producing as darkness falls. Melatonin is needed for a good night's sleep. When melatonin production is disrupted we can have trouble falling asleep and feel tired in the morning.
Several studies have suggested that smartphones and tablets are stopping us from getting a good nights sleep. The NHS have called for a 'bedtime mode' to be installed in smartphones which will limit the amount of blue colour at night. Apps could be made more sleep friendly too; if there was the capability of reducing the colour at night.
The good news is; there are a number of steps you can take to get a better nights sleep without ditching your smartphone or tablet. Your smartphone can actually help you to get a good night's sleep and wake up feeling refreshed. The number one piece of advice is to not use your smartphone for an hour before going to bed as this allows you to wind down and switch off. Its also recommended that you don't take your smartphone to bed with you or if you must; switch it off.
