Xiaomi smartphone

Have you heard of Xiaomi smartphones? Probably not. The reason for this is that Xiaomi is a Chinese smartphone company which is relatively unknown in the UK.  However this looks set to change as Xiaomi have purchased 1500 Microsoft patents indicating that Xiaomi plans to expand its smartphone sales and enter into new markets.

Xiaomi are the world’s fourth largest smartphone maker and hold the Guinness World Record for smartphone sales. In 2015 Xiaomi sold over 2.1 million smartphones during a 12 hour flash sale to mark the company’s 5th birthday.

What You Need To Know About Xiaomi

Xiaomi smartphones are incredibly similar to iPhones and Xiaomi are known as ‘the Apple of China’. Xiaomi's CEO Lei Jun recently dismissed accusations that the company duplicates Apple products and claimed that Xiaomi smartphones were actually better than the iPhone saying; ‘The Mi Note is lighter, thinner and shorter than the iPhone 6 Plus but our screen is larger’.

The patent deal between Xiaomi and Microsoft will benefit both companies. Microsoft have faced frequent anti-trust issues in China over their software bundles and Xiaomi will find it easier to enter new markets and gain regulator approval as holders of intellectual property rights. Microsoft and Xiaomi also signed a cross licensing agreement as part of the deal.
